The Annual Honors Band concert is the culmination of a three-day festival for talented woodwind, brass and percussion students from high schools across the eastern part of the United States. The concert features two honors ensembles, the Honors Wind Ensemble and the Honors Band, as well as the Honors Festival Band, which brings both groups together.

Seavey Visiting Writers Series: Brenda Hillman

Brenda Hillman is the author of 10 collections of poetry, including her most recent, Extra Hidden Life, among the Days. In 2016 she was named Academy of American Poets Chancellor. Hillman’s other awards include the 2012 Academy of American Poets Fellowship, the 2005 William Carlos Williams Prize for poetry, and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Hillman is the Olivia C. Filippi professor of poetry at St. Mary’s College.

Derrick R. Brooms is a faculty member in sociology and Africana studies at the University of Cincinnati, where his research and activism focus on educational equity, race and racism, diversity and inequality, and identity. Brooms will discuss resilience and "Being Black, Being Male on Campus: Understanding and Confronting Black Male Collegiate Experiences", his 2017 book from which an excerpt appears in this year’s Common Reading.

Weber Chapel Auditorium Kristina Marie Darling, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is a first-generation college student and an advocate for women in the arts, higher education and the professions. She is the author of 30 books, including Look to Your Left: The Poetics of Spectacle; Je Suis L’Autre: Essays & Interrogations; and DARK HORSE: Poems. She has lectured on creative writing in such locations as New York University, the Sorbonne Library and the Castle of Otranto.
