SUMMARY:A Novel Idea - Crafting a Memoir
DESCRIPTION:A Memoir is a journey through the writer’s past. It is not an autobiography – one’s entire life – but a slice of life. Paint your own picture of a personal moment or experience and share your unique journey through the art of creative writing. Learn how to adapt your life story to an artistically composed\, memorable narrative in this 6-session virtual memoir writing workshop with writer\, novelist\, and A Novel Idea instructor Don Helin. \nCreative nonfiction is useful in a memoir as it helps bring scenes alive with enhanced setting and dialogue. Many personal history memoirs succeed because the writer transforms real people into compelling\, fleshed-out characters on the page. You are the foundation of your story and the more honestly you dig into your core\, the richer your story will be. CREATE scenes with rich description & engaging dialogue TRANSFORM people into compelling characters STRUCTURE your stories for clarity & strong storytelling Explore these storytelling techniques and more in a casual Meet & Eat dinnertime setting. \nOver 6 sessions\, you will acquire story-telling techniques to help you document your memoir. Topics to be discussed include: Research: Go back to find the small things that caught your attention. Structure: Chronological versus Episodic Setting and Scene: A memoir is not something you invent\, but something you uncover by digging. Characters: Explaining the motivation of the character is critical. Dialogue: Break up a series of mega-paragraphs with interesting dialogue. Point of View: Whose story is it and who is telling it? \nTuition is $200\, or $175 for PCCA members for the series of 6 sessions running from January to June\, 2021. Please contact Arts In Education Director Rebecca Covert at 717-567-7023 or rebecca@perrycountyarts.org with any questions you may have. \nGeneral Rate: $200 PCCA Member Rate: $175 \nSecond Wednesdays\, 5-8 PM:\nJanuary 13\nFebruary 10\nMarch 10\nApril 14\nMay 12\nJune 9 \nVirtual Zoom classroom\nAges 18 and up\nREGISTRATION DEADLINE: December 14\, 2020 \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: When the Bough Breaks
DESCRIPTION:Despite our history of decimating vast tracts of forests\, often in the name of civilization\, trees remain indifferent to our existence. They continue offering shade\, shelter\, sustenance and survival. They long precede the human race and will ultimately succeed us\, despite our alternating negligence and reverence.   \nFacing ongoing human conflict and impending climate catastrophe\, the reality or representation of trees can offer solace and space—for the necessity of talking and listening. The works of these artists and accompanying poets embrace the tree — materially and conceptually— through figure and metaphor\, analysis and allegory\, and as record and reflection. Works by:  Patricia Bellan-Gillen\,  Denise Burge\, Zoë Charlton\,  Ellen Harvey\,  Alex Lukas\,  Clayton Merrell\,  Sarah Slavick\, and Susanne Slavick. \n

SUMMARY:Online & In-Person Exhibition: Human Expectations II
DESCRIPTION:Working with touch and play\, the artists exhibiting in Human Expectations II search for expression and experience through material. Forms emerge from the artists’ own bodies creating monuments to life and desire. Sharing what living feels like with eyes closed\, improvisations and intimate experiences become powerful and suggestive objects. Like a boulder on top of a hill – these works fill the imagination with narrative possibility. Works on view by William J. O’Brien\, Dolores Furtado\, Kris Grey\, Eun-Ha Paek and Lilly Zuckerman.   \n

SUMMARY:Zammesei: Bringing the Lancaster Community Together Through the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) is pleased to present Zammesei: Bringing the Lancaster Community Together Through the Arts\, an exhibition featuring recent works by the College’s Center for Creative Exploration students and members of the Garden Spot Village community\, curated by Aidan Thackray ’22. The exhibition is available April 1 for public viewing online at https://pcad.edu/exhibits_beyond/ \n“Togetherness during a global pandemic is in short supply\,” states Thackray\, a PCA&D Illustration major. “The concept of Zammesei (“To be together” in Pennsylvania Dutch) lies at the heart of this exhibition and stems from the rich traditions of this region.” \nAll featured artworks were created by students and faculty of the Center for Creative Exploration at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. In early 2021\, residents of the Garden Spot Village community were invited to participate in a series of online workshops focusing on watercolor\, collage\, Notan design\, poetry\, and automatic drawing. Across a variety of media\, this exhibit unites the residents of Garden Spot Village and the PCA&D community in creativity during a time of uncertainty and isolation. Zammesei is a celebration of art’s intrinsic ability to bring people together. \nArtists include Hannah Bost\, Lindsey Cammauf\, Matt Chapman\, Erin Dorney\, Donna Felton\, Noelle Fortna\, Eva Gallagher\, Bertha Hawk\, Evelyn Hershey\, Le Hinton\, Angie Hohenadel\, Doreen Jacoby\, Michael Kelchner\, Lia Lindemuth\, Nichole Madonna\, Connie McKane\, Donna Milton\, Joann Monk\, and Barbara Strasko. \nOriginally from Slatington\, Pennsylvania\, Thackray works as a Life Enrichment Aide at a local senior living facility on the weekends while pursuing her college education. She is also an active member of CORE Gallery\, the student-run exhibition space\, and engages in special projects for the Main Gallery at PCA&D. As curator of Zammesei: Bringing the Lancaster Community Together Through the Arts\, Thackray successfully merged her love for education\, the community\, and gallery work into a heartfelt experience for the Lancaster community — the city she is proud to call home. \n

SUMMARY:"Record Release": A collaborative exhibition by A Day in the Life Records and PCA&D's Center for Creative Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Artists from the Center for Creative Exploration’s “Creating Art in Photoshop” Young Artist class will exhibit their work — full album cover designs\, from photography to graphic design to production — for First Friday at A Day in the Life Records\, 24A W. Walnut St.\, Lancaster. The exhibition will be on display April 2-17 during regular business hours (below). \n“Creating Art in Photoshop” was open to Young Artists in grades 7-9\, and taught by artist Adam Serrano\, who specializes in graphic design\, photo editing\, and creative consulting. During the Winter Session class\, Serrano used his passion for music and art to guide the class through the project’s full range of production skills. The process allowed each student to focus on their own particular style while incorporating lessons in design principles and photo manipulation. \nThe album cover project\, Serrano says\, “was a great way to get them excited about the real-world applications of what a graphic design job could be.” \nCollaborating with PCA&D’s Center for Creative Exploration on this exhibition was the perfect fit\, says Daniel Flynn\, co-owner of A Day in the Life Records. For many young music fans\, he says\, music often is simply something that gets downloaded — there’s not a visual or physical component to it. Learning the connection between music and visuals\, he says\, gives them some insight into how music and art work together to influence popular culture and inspire changes. \nDay in the LIfe Records:\nMonday ~ 11am to 6 pm\nTuesday ~ Closed\nWednesday ~ Closed\nThursday ~ 11 am to 6 pm\nFriday ~ 11 am to 7 pm\nSaturday ~ 11 am to 6 pm\nSunday ~ noon to 5 pm \nAttached graphic: Courtesy Adam Serrano \n

SUMMARY:21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we’ll lead up to the Race Against Racism with our BRAND NEW 21-Day Racial Equity and Social Justice Challenge\, starting April 5 through April 25! \nThe challenge is designed to create dedicated time and space to build more effective social justice habits\, particularly those dealing with issues of race\, power\, privilege\, and leadership. \nParticipation in an activity like this helps us to discover how racial injustice and social injustice impact our community\, to connect with one another\, and to identify ways to dismantle racism and other forms of discrimination. \nThis is an exciting opportunity to dive deep into racial equity and social justice. \nWe hope you will join us on this journey and we can’t wait to get started! \n

SUMMARY:Vision Clinic
DESCRIPTION:The Harrisburg Keystone Rotary Club is hosting a vision clinic in Harrisburg this spring. The clinic will be run by Mission-Vision.org with help from Rotary volunteers. \nThe exams are designed to both provide for an eyewear prescription while screening for ocular eye diseases. We screen for Macular Degeneration\, Color Blindness\, Astigmatism\, Glaucoma\, etc. Since we do not dilate their eyes\, we do not give out written or oral eye prescriptions\, only free glasses. \nMission Vision statement: “Using our unique delivery model\, we are able to cost-effectively provide and make sure that eye care and prescription eyewear go directly to the people with the most need. Collaborating closely with partner organizations\, we identify those most in need and we are able to educate them on the importance in maintain good eye health.” \nAll mobile clinics are staffed by dedicated and caring medical professionals\, as well as trained staff members and volunteers. Upon arrival\, patients are greeted by the clinic coordinator who then checks them in and reviews their medical history. \nFrom there\, an optometric technician screens them for distance and near visual acuity\, eye motility\, visual field\, auto-refractions\, pupil response\, intraocular pressure\, color vision and depth perception. \nNext\, a state-licensed optometrist performs a thorough eye exam to determine whether or not prescription glasses are needed. If\, however\, during the course of the exam\, any medical condition requiring further evaluation is detected\, the optometrist will explain the situation and provide a referral. \nWith an impressive sampling of frames (donated brand new by major eyewear manufacturers) to choose from\, patients make their selections with the help of an optician who also takes the necessary measurements to ensure a perfect fit. Two to three weeks later\, the prescription glasses are first inspected and labeled by Mission Vision staff and then delivered back to the partner organizations (https://mission-vision.org/the-mobile-clinic- experience/). \nProgressive no-line glasses are not available. \nClinics are restricted to age 5 and older. \n
