Presidential Dialogues: Lessons in Leadership

September 21 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In the first of a series of talks on leadership, Dickinson College interim President John E. Jones III, will sit down with Joanne Adebayo, young alumni trustee and partnership marketing coordinator at L.L. Bean, to discuss how her Dickinson education has shaped her future and leadership goals. Their discussion, “Presidential Dialogues: Lessons in Leadership,” will take place Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Anita Tuvin Schlechter (ATS) Auditorium, 360 W. Louther St. The event is free and open to the public. Face coverings are required.
Through stories and personal narratives, Jones, a 1977 graduate, and Adebayo, a 2021 graduate, will share experiences regarding their Dickinson education. The discussion will also highlight Adebayo’s preparation for the future and what role Dickinson will play in shaping her leadership and career goals.
In July, Jones became interim president after stepping down from a lifetime appointment as a federal judge in the U.S. Middle District of Pennsylvania. Jones also previously served as the chair of Dickinson’s board of trustees. During his time on the bench, Jones decided a number of high-profile cases, including the landmark Kitzmiller v. Dover School District, after which he held it was unconstitutional to teach intelligent design within a public school science curriculum. He also resolved the matter of Whitewood v. Wolf by striking down as unconstitutional Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage.
Jones co-chaired Pennsylvania Governor-elect Tom Ridge’s transition team and served as chair of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. He has been named one of the college’s 25 most influential graduates. In 2006, Time magazine named Jones one of its “Time 100” most influential people in the world.
Adebayo, originally from Princeton, N.J., graduated from Dickinson in 2021, with a degree in international business and management with a concentration in social entrepreneurship and innovation. While at Dickinson, she received the Grant D. Fryling ’04 Memorial Prize for International Business and was a presidential fellow. As a young alumni trustee, she provides the board with a current perspective on student life and college policies.
